Re: utah-cs.164: Truncated Articles (duke.1642 followup)

An alternative to trying to confirm correct transmission on an item
by item basis is a ocassional audit.  Each system can from time
to time tell the systems it is connected to which items it has
and their checksums.  There would then be a protocol by which
a system could ask a neighbor to retransmit an item that had
somehow been garbled.

This mechanism is essentially the same as I have proposed to
minimize the time machines spend talking to each other.  But
the objection usually raised to my proposal (i.e. you have to
talk twice to get an item) doesn't apply if it is only used as
a backup to the primary transmissions.
