Re: Freedom of the Netwaves

Regardless of the question of censorship,  net.jokes.q is unacceptable to
our site in its present form.  The taxpayers of the state of Illinois
have the right to demand a certain moral level in the expenditure
of state funds.  Clearly using state supported resources to forward
material of questionable taste, especially in the form that net.jokes.q
has taken, is unacceptable.  Therefore uiucdcs will not accept
submissions from net.jokes.q or forward this newsgroup to any other site.

On a personal level, I think that some items, in particular the dead
baby jokes are very offensive and I wish that individuals
would use more sensitivity in deciding whether a joke should really
be submitted.  Within bounds ethnic jokes and other items in net.jokes.q
are acceptable to me.  Obviously netnews does not possess the amount
of intelligence etc. to screen the offensive entries.
If people really want to submit garbage maybe there should be
a newsgroup net.jokes.g for people with the mentality that says
if a joke is really gross it must be great.
