read-only newsgroups (eagle.164 followup)
Read-only newsgroups are an excellent idea, for many reasons other
than the one Jeff suggested.  We might, for example, want to restrict
who can submit "systems" items here (that's a local newsgroup that
covers about 10 machines in the local area).  Similarly, I've heard the
need for restricted-read newsgroups, so that a dispersed group of
people can carry on a private conversation.

I don't think any effort is needed, though, to convert submissions to
fa.human-nets to mail commands.  If you use the recnews program and
Berkeley's delivermail, you can set up aliases for each local newsgroup;
that way, mail could replace inews.  Among other advantages, that way
one gets the benefit of powerful mail composition programs like ucbmail.
How I long for shell escapes, filters, etc., in netnews.....
