heirarchical newsgroups, a warning
first, mark's comments:

The heirarchy idea sounds wonderful, and deserves further consideration.
It should work with existing software, modulo the requirement that newsgroup
names are only significant in the first 13 characters in B news (because
they are stored as directories, and a . file has the length, taking the
extra character).  Some thought might be given to changing .'s to /'s
for file storage - this would solve the length problem and if the number
of newsgroups keeps growing the linearity of UNIX directories might start
to become a problem.
---
please be careful not to choose longer names until a directory tree is
working.  if a group, Y, does get created which matches another, X, in
the first 13 chars my guess is that Y will show up properly in .newsrc,
but directory X will be used and articles in X will be reread when Y is
encountered by "readnews".  not good!   scott <UCBVAX!MENLO70!SJK>
