Complain, Complain...

<FLAME ON>

It seems to me that there are an awful lot of new newsgroups
springing up that are entirely too specific as far as what they discuss
goes.  While granted, everyone has a "right" to discuss whatever he
wants, I think that there should be some consideration to the people
who have to either 1) muddle through it all, or 2) continually update
there .newsrc (Betanews) or subscription list (Anews).

       I'll make some examples/suggestions:

       "net.ski" and "net.scuba":  Personally, I don't ski (although
one of these days I might get around to it), and I don't scuba dive.
Now, there are some things that I do do (redundancy check), such as
ride horses, swim, etc.   Why not combine these two newsgroups into
one, say "net.sports" or "net.rec" (recreation)?  This would let more
people into the discussions, along with more information about a wider
variety of topics.

"net.vwrabbit":  This one could easily be changed to "net.auto",
as I'm sure that there are more cars in the world than VW's (I myself
have a 1980 Dodge Colt, and would love to talk to others...).

"net.aviation":  This one's not too bad, although I just read
all the news from over Turkey Break, and all the net.aviation stuff
was in net.columbia.........

"net.chess": Why?  What was wrong with "net.games"?  I like to
read the stuff about the chess games, but I can't see the need for
another news group just for that.

"net.ham-radio":  This is my pet peeve, but I'll try to be
gentle.  I have no argument that this deserves a newsgroup all to
itself, there's an awful lot in there.  My biggest complaint is that
there seem to be an awful lot of "call book" items, and they all look
alike with the exception of a few names at the end.  Couldn't we just
put one BIG one out every 2-3 months?  Also, how about starting on
such tangents as CB radio, AM-FM-Commercial radio, etc.?

Well, I guess I've griped and complained enough for one
day, but I hope my point came across:  instead of 50 billion little
newsgroups with SPECIAL applications/discussions, wouldn't it be
nicer to have a few big newsgroups with general subject areas?
