more on plato notes
In reply to cbosgd!mark's questions about implementation of
replies to notes (a la Plato):

Both questions are related (essentially:  how does one keep replies
to a note grouped with the note).  The answer is that
replies are always associated with a note.  When writing a news item
one either writes (a) a response to an old item or (b) a new item.
Items are identified by a "unique ID number" so that everyone's news
program can file responses correctly.  The unique ID number can be
generated at each site by using a (unique) site code with a sequence
number appended to it.  These notes are then disseminated throughout
the network.  Replies, when disseminated, name their "base note" and
as such are associated with them.  Rather than doing actual sorting,
notes typically have a set of pointers which tell where their responses
lie.

Implementation is not a problem -- we have a bare bones implementation
running here at U of Illinois; I have received mail of a different version
running elsewhere.

As far as "subscribing" or "unsubscribing" to a sequence of notes
(within a news topic):  the design used at Plato, here, and the other
notes system all allows for easy skipping of topics to be avoided and
possible review if desired.  Really -- the stuff does just what "feels
right" once seen in action.
