On Duke, as on many other systems, the slow speed of news has
become something of a problem.
I am now prepared to release a new version which includes several
performance enhancements, but no major changes.
The amount of work done on article insertion and the amount of
time spent locked on article insertion have both been cut back as
much as possible. Also, news does not spawn a separate process
to broadcast articles received off the net. This helps to cut
down the tremendous proliferation of processes running when a
batch of net articles is received. Canceling an article has been
made much faster. Many of the arrays and buffers have been
expanded. The 'history' mechanism has been removed.
This version of news does NOT have many of the Berkeley mods, as
we have been to lazy to merge them back in. Thus this release is
of primary interest to large systems running 95% (or more)
vanilla news (a.k.a. 'netnews'), and is viewed as only a stopgap
measure, while we wait for berkeley's new version.
