Short Paths
The Shannons' USENET map shows the paths used by netnews between various
machines. However, for sending mail and files, there are many shorter paths
available ( for instance, at houxt I can uucp directly to princeton, instead
of using. houxi!ihnss!allegra!princeton!, which goes to Chicago and Murray  Hill
and back, using many acu's and lots of telephone $$.  Obviously, a total map
of the network would be too cumbersome to read, much less use, but
a partial map could still be quite useful.  The upper layers of the net appear
to be: houxi ihnss mhtsa ucbvax harpo chico duke and decvax.
A useful map would include the shortest (either in miles or number of hops)
connections between:
       1) All the upper level machines.
       2) Each machine and 1 or 2 upper levels.
One way to find out this information is through the uuname command, which
identifies everyone you can talk to directly; however, it cannot be
executed remotely via uux.
Does anyone have this info? (most of the published data only includes
netnews connections, as opposed to mail/uucp/busses).  If nobody has, I'll
probably volunteer to digest it in a week or so, but no sense reinventing
the wheel.
