Re: Commercial news, net.general
sii!wje makes good arguments (in net.general) to the effect that
real product info is of general interest; it would be a good deal nicer
than uninformed flames or quotes from the "Science Writers" of the
Daily Bugle (or even the New York Times; compare the Monday "Science Times"
to the current Science News sometime - the difference in ACCURACY is
astounding).

However, I must demur about the need for a net.general.  It seems to
me that there are interest groups in particular KINDS of products
(net.periphs, net.works, etc.) and that the appropriate way to put
"official" commercial info is to post to the appropriate interest
group.  It is essential, of course, that those who place such articles
make it explicit that they represent the companies whose products
they are describing.

Indeed, this gives both vendors and potential customers the APPROPRIATE
forum for discussing mutual interests.  I, for one, would feel well
disposed to considering a product if I knew that the vendor AND a fair
chunk of his potential market were listening to the group I posted
problems to...
