Re: net.mucords

RARE INSTANCES?????? What about jazz-rock? Folk-rock? What about people
like Keith Jarrett, Glenn Branca, Philip Glass, etc. who straddle several
classifications?
Do you then submit to both music.jazz & music.rock (& etc.) in such cases?
This only means more duplication.  I personally see such strict categorization
as detrimental to the acquisition of musical knowledge (isn't that the idea
behind all of this?).  I also see it as a facet of the "my-kind-of-music-is-
better-than-yours-so-I-don't-want-to-hear-about-your-boring-***-music"
mentality.  When someone responds to my article about "electropop" by
giving me info on people like Terry Riley or some other classical/jazz
artist I haven't heard much about, that's when I really get something out
of using the net.  If all I wanted to do was blab to other people about
stuff we all already knew about, I might as well join a Rick Springfield
fan club or something.  Yes, I once thought such sub-classifications would
be nice, but despite all the mail I've received with that same point of
view, I've come to think that it's counterproductive to have subgroups
like net.music.only-from-my-favorite-period-in-history-and-geographic-location
-and-of-course-by-my-favorite-composer on the net.  What happens when
some people in net.music.jazz decide they only like Benny Goodman
(net.music.jazz.swing.1930s????) Gimme a break!!! You get to put
a title on your articles-----that should scare away/attract people who are
repulsed by/interested in your brand of music.
