net.music vs. net.records: SUMMARY
I am now submitting two articles: the other one is the "digestified" feedback
from you people on music vs. records; this one is a summary of that feedback.

Other than two general comments/questions and one person who just
said "No need for both." but didn't say which one should be kept, these are the
totals:

Keep net.music only:    (identified in feedback with "M")       4
Keep net.records only:  (identified in feedback with "R")       1
Keep both and define:   (identified in feedback with "B")       6

(All other articles are identified in feedback with "?"; by this
I mean that the dotted line beginning each article has either "M","R","B",
 or "?" to identify it.)

Having already read all of this through before, let me make a few additional
comments:
1) It is true that virtually everything in "net.records" has concerned music
thus far, but since the group exists it should be available as a
forum/bulletin board/want ad list for those interested in particular
records (esp. non-music) and for info about records in general. The
nit that some of us listen to tapes is remedied if "records" is
considered short for "recordings", thus encompassing records, tapes,
       magnetic wire, etc.
2) The boundaries between these groups are indeed fuzzy, but I think that
those in favor of "net.music" have an edge.  Perhaps all discussions
that are music-related at all should go here, rather than trying in
vain to separate out certain categories which we have decided do not
belong in music but in records instead.  This would leave net.records
with a purpose similar to (1) above.

To summarize the summary:
net.records - info on record shops, non-musical records, want lists
                       for record collectors/buyers, gibberish about
records/record industry in general (e.g., cutouts)
net.music   - discussions about music, musicians, musical instruments,
their output (concert performances, recordings*, sheet
music), announcements of concerts, festivals, etc.
net.audio   - for those who wish to discuss stereo equipment, record
cleaning devices, brands of recording tape, home
recording studios (YAY!!), etc. (This idea is not mine,
but comes from one piece of feedback I received
--author unknown, sorry--though the author called it
                       "net.stereo"; I think "net.audio" will serve more
people and provide for the future (quad(?), binaural,
                       holographic...)

* To those who disagree with having discussions about music recordings in
net.music:  would you start a discussion about an artist's record
in net.records, then move it to net.music when you talked about the
       artist's concert/interview/etc., and then return to net.records
to discuss the live album from that concert, etc?????????
The whole scheme is unenforceable (people will still submit record reviews to
net.records) but I think it's the most viable, as it will keep continuing
discussions within one group for the most part, and hopefully prevent the
dreaded duplication.  Before you send me hate mail, please read the digestified
feedback. (Then you can send me hate mail.----Wait! That's not an open
invitation!!)           Rich Rosen pyuxjj!rlr (I'm fool enough to give my
                                               address after that?)
