I agree with Greg Guthrie.  Usenet should have a much more flexible method
to handle news groups.  New ones should be easy to start, old ones should
die gracefully, mistypes should be tolerated, and it should be a whole lot
easier to turn off groups I don't want to be bothered with, and also easy
to know all about the active groups.

How about a re-design with a real tree structure of group names that maps
into a real tree structure of (the same) file names.  Then pre-define some
of the files(groups) for specific purposes as aid to the users (README's,
keywords, statement of purpose, etc.).  Readnews and inews could then do
appropriate greps to present the user with choices, or at least some info.
