Top 40 Countdown
Since this is a record poll, I thought I'd include my "Top 40" records
(YUK!YUK!) The first 20 are listed in sort-of rank order, valid at least
as to which quartile they are in, followed by another ten that couldn't fit,
followed by ten (subject to interpretation) anthologies, which I didn't
think belonged in a favorite records list. It's unfair to pit a regular
album against somebody's greatest hits package. Well, here goes...

Nuggets -----
We Do 'Em Our Way -----
Themes for Great Cities Simple Minds
ANY MOTOWN ANTHOLOGY Vandellas, Supremes, Four Tops,
Miracles, Jacksons, Stevie, ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I know the last one's not really fair, but I put caveats on my recommendations
of any of these anthologies (I personally own three, but would love to own
more). The big three record jobs are mostly filler. But the one record sets
are always lacking one/two great songs (Marvin Gaye's lacks "Ain't That
Peculiar", so I own the single). I've been told that "The Motown Story",
though it has everything you'd ever want to own (almost), contains voiceover
intros by the artists to almost every song. "The Motown Story" is a great
monument to music history at $10-$12 for 3, 4 or 5 (I forget) records. Motown
has just released two new packages called "Sixteen Number One Hits: The
Early (or Late) Sixties", which are MUST-OWN records, especially at the 4.00
budget price!!!!!
P.S. Nuggets is a collection of rare (?) 60's gems compiled by Lenny Kaye,
which I picked up at (you guessed it) Cheap Thrills for 2.99 (two records).
We Do 'Em Our Way, a collection of "punk" bands covering old tunes (incl.
Pistols' "Rock Around the Clock", Slits' "Heard It Thru the Grapevine", and
the unforgettable "Nights in White Satin" by the Dickies) for 3.99 at
C.T.'s. (Nuggets probably isn't available there anymore, though the
"Pebbles" collections are, sometimes at cutout prices.)
