Fairlight digital synthesizer
First off, for those of you who are wondering what the "Fairlight" mentioned
in every other article about the group Asia really is... The Fairlight CMI
(Computer Music Instrument) is but one of the new breed of digital synthesizer.
Without going into too much detail, it employs three main methods of synthesis:
1) additive synthesis and/or frequency modulation (Chowning type FM) synthesis
(simulation of an analog synthesizer, in effect), 2) drawing of waveforms onto
a CRT, and 3) sampling of audio input as the basis for sound generation.  Any
combination of these may be used within an "instrument"/"voice" as they are
called, plus one can create an interpolation between two voices (over the time
envelope of the note/the keyboard range).  I have some further info on this if desired.
For those of you in the N.Y. metro area, there is a local electronic music
studio which offers lessons and/or recording time with the Fairlight.  The name
of the studio is PASS (Public Access Synthesizer Studio), and a class (with a
group) costs $200, which involves about 24.5 hours oflessons and hands-on time
during a concentrated period (over the course of about a week).  Access time to
the Fairlight after one has completed the program is $15/hr.  Not at all a bad
deal.  For further and probably more accurate info, call:
       PASS                    ask for:
       16 W. 22 St.            Brenda Hutchinson
       NY NY 10010             Clive Smith
       (212)-989-2060       OR Carol Parkinson
There is also a possibility of semi-private lessons for a small group (3 or
less) which could possibly 1) cost a little less and 2) be scheduled around the
needs of the students and instructor.  Anyone interested in working out such an
arrangement (to be a part of this proposed small group) can contact me.  (The
class described above begins, I think, 5/26. If you would prefer a full-fledged class type of structure, give them a call as soon as possible.)

(At last, an article about computer music in a newsgroup supposedly devoted to
computer music.)
