music synthesis
I have once again started getting very interested in music.  For those
who haven't seen it, Sharp has put out a neat hand-held synthesizer which
has a small keyboard and can remember something like 100 notes, play
them back at different tempos with different envelopes and waveforms,
and even accompany them with some classic rhythms.   Only about $70!
When I was taking a vlsi design course at Berkeley, I heard about
some people working on music synthesis chips.  Does anyone have any
more info?
Does anyone here subscribe to the Computer Music Journal?  Do
you know what issue had a description of Hal Alles' (of Murray Hill BTL)
synthesizer?  It was very powerful, and could even play back someone's
voice shifted up or down in pitch (same tempo) in real time.  Sing barbershop
quartet with yourself!
Does anyone have experience with the ALF synthesizer or alphaSyntari?
Both plug into an Apple.
       Happy Holidays!
