Check out the SJ Mercury today, page 2A:

"I couldn't ask for anything better," Sallin (producer) said of the audience, which applauded the end of the movie; in which Spock - the green-blooded alien stoically played by Leonard Nimoy - dies.

"The acid test for us was at the point of his death," said Gordon Weaver, Paramount senior vice president for worldwide marketing. "The audience sat there totally silent; some were crying."

"It left you hanging at the end of the movie, whether Spock dies or not," Koehler said. "That was his voice you heard at the end."
