To me "hacker" has always been something of an insult.
It is related (at least in my mind) to the phrases
"hack writer" and "hack (taxi) driver".  Both of
which imply speed of production without too much concern
for quality.  Another connotation of the phrase "hacker"
(again to me) is that he/she is usually unconcerned with the theory
behind the programs or work other people have done in the area.
