UNIX(TM) Trademark
The following are excerpts from a letter from the BTL Legal and
Patent Division concerning the UNIX* trademark (letter dated
January 27, 1982):

----------
"UNIX continues to be our trademark.  It should appear in full
upper case, and its first occurrence in running text should be
footnoted as below.  A superscripted UNIX(TM) may be used where
footnoting is not possible -- as in a title or a figure -- but
the footnote is preferred.  Contrary to rumor, the UNIX mark is
not "registered" so we should never say that it is.  If and when
UNIX is registered there will be plenty of official notice, so
you needn't wonder.

"All the old rules continue to apply, such as: use UNIX not as a
noun, but as an adjective to describe Bell System software
distributed under license.  Thus, UNIX system is correct, UNIX
operator is incorrect; UNIX editor is correct, UNIX environment
is incorrect.  UNIX describes the source of the software and not
its character.  Therefore, UNIX C compiler is correct so long as
the C compiler was written at Bell Laboratories and not somewhere
else."
----------
*UNIX is a trademark of Bell Laboratories
