Timex/Sinclair 1000 PC
For all you micro fans, Timex will soon be selling the Sinclair ZX-81. The
following article appears in the EE Times dated April 26, 1982
***************************************************************************
NEW YORK--Sinclair Research and Timex-a couple of names not unknown to
buyers of watches and low-cost computers-have teamed up to make the first
personal computer that sells for under $100. Not a kit, the Timex/Sinclair
1000 PC comes fully assembled. And it will be on sale by August at
100,000 retail outlets for Timex products, including the corner drugstore.
The Timex/Sinclair 1000 is a look-alike of Sinclair's ZX-81 that's
presently made for Sinclair by Timex in its Dundee, Scotland plant. Aside
from the changed name plate, the only difference is that the Timex version
ups the ZX-81 memory form 1 kbyte to 2 kbytes. The already familiar
features of the ZX-81, like cassette program storage and use of any
color or black-and-white TV for the display, remain unchanged.
In addition to the basic unit, Timex will sell computer add-ons and soft-
ware. A 16 kbyte memory-expansion module costs $49.95. Sinclair's
widely advertised 32-column graphics and alpha-numeric screen printer
will be on sale the latter part of this year for $99.95.
Timex also added a new feature to the micro--the ability to communicate
via a telephone modem with data services like THE SOURCE, CompuServe or
Dow Jones. Called a Communications Interface Device, it's a direct-
connect, 300 baud modem with the capability to automatically dial the
phone. The modem adapter will be on sale later this year for $99.95.
Timex will also offer software for its miniscule micro. At least a
dozen programs will be available, with more in the works. Software
is expected to be priced at $9.95 to $19.95 each, depending on the
program complexity. And Timex has promised a VisiCalc--like
electronic spread sheet for the Timex/Sinclair 1000.

Sure sounds like a good deal to me.
