Care and feeding of local area networks with a public user community.
The publication in this newsgroup of the XYZZY command for the Sytek Localnet
20 product has been most counterproductive at this site.  We are a large
computer science school with the result that most of the students here are
in the hacker class (at least after the first term).  Undocumented testing
procedures should remain so if at all possible, since anyone with access
to a computer will try anything they can think of or find out.  While this
has only been a nuisance so far, the increasing number of connections to
our net will increase our vulnerability to such things.  (It appears that
someone used the xyzzy procedure on our Localnet box that we use for uucp
originating calls, and thereby hung it.  I did a reset and tried to disable
the command, and I hope it works.  Anyway, this is a plea to keep such
sensitive and possibly destructive stuff out of the public network.
