Presidents Buy Socks
Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, and Jerry Ford were all on
vacation together at Rancho del Cielo when they realized they
were all out of socks.  So they all drove into Santa Barbara and
went into the sock department of the Sears store.  They told the
man behind the counter that they needed socks.  "Well, now," he
said, "I'll need to know how many pairs you want."
Ronald Reagan spoke up first.  "Why don't you give me seven
pairs of socks?  That will give me one pair for each day of the
week, and Nancy will only have to wash them once a week."
Jimmy Carter was next.  "Ah think Ah'll take fahve pair,"
he said.  "Down on the peanut fahm, we genuhlly go beahfoot on
the weekends, so fahve pair ought to be plenty."
Jerry Ford thought for quite a while.  Finally he said,
"I'll take twelve pairs."
"Twelve pairs of socks!" said the salesman.  "Why, Mr. Ford!
Here's President Reagan, who's buying seven pairs, and Mr. Carter,
who's buying only five pairs; what in the world are you going to do
with twelve pairs of socks?"
"Well, you know," said Jerry Ford.  "That makes one for January,
one for February..."
