Etymology of DAEMON

       What is the derivation of the word DAEMON as in
       'mail daemon' etc.  I first came across the word in a DEC
       operating system (TSS8 I think) and have seen it in several
       systems since.  I have never come up with a solution which
       I find satisfying.
