The Naming of UNIX
There was once a system, developed at MIT, called Multics, which
stood for "Multiplexed Information and Computing Service".  Many
of the ideas and more of the flavor were borrowed to create UNIX,
which tended to strip them down to a more human scale.

So, since it's smaller than Multics, it's UNIX (which does \not/
stand for "Uniplexed ...".
