query about long unames
here at sri-unix, we are trying to decide whether or not to inforce a
policy to limit unames to 8 characters or less.  why this is an issue
is that certain programs (notably "passwd" and "Mail") call getlogin(3)
which fails since only 8 chars are stored in /etc/utmp.  has anyone
else encountered this problem and what was your solution?  what other
functions fail due to long unames?  thanx.   scott <UCBVAX!MENLO70!SJK>
