Hayes Smartmodem Help?
Would someone please help me with this query? Also, could someone
that has access to ARPA shove it into unix-wizards? The ucbvax!unix-wizards
mailbox seems to be broken.

Sorry, not an Arpanet gateway!

*--------------RETURNED MESSAGE---------------*

I am resending this query, since the first one apparently got lost:

We have just purchased a Hayes Stack Smartmodem ($279 for a Bell 103
direct connect auto-answer/originate modem with autodialer) and
would like to use it to automate our uucp setup (I dial everything
by hand now). Has anyone out there done this already? I suspect that
it will be necessary to either write a phony dn driver that links ito
the dh driver (it all goes across one serial line), or something like
that. Does anyone out there have experience with this (or a similar
setup) that could help? I won't be able to start creating code for
a week or two because of other pressures.
By the way, the unit is really slick -- I checked it out this morning
and was quite impressed. It won't do 1200 baud, unfortunately, but
it is a great boon if you are on a low budget (read CHEAP).
We had thought that it would be nice to be able to use the unit for
both dial in and out, but the difficulties of turning a line around
on UNIX seem incredible. The scenario would be to have it be a dial in
line until someone did a uucico or cu, and then, if no one is logged
in, make the line not be a line available for logging in, and proceed,
resetting everything when done. I see that you have to hack at
/etc/ttys, kill off a login process, and make sure that init doesn't
start another one. On top of that, you have to make sure no one
is logged in there!

       Help will be appreciated,
       Chris Kent (cincy!chris)
