Austin USENIX Conference Sumary
For those who weren't able to attend the USENIX conference held
in ustin, Texas; perhaps some of the following will be of use
(the UNIX/370 "rumor" in my last issue of unix-wizards prompted
this note). I might note that I take responsibility for any
errors in the material presented below.
==========================================================================
Western Electric announced the following "new" products:
1st CPU Additional OEM Educational
Product CPU CPU
--------------------------------------------------------------------
UNIX/1100 $30K $10K $12K $400
(For UNIVAC 1100, runs under EXEC 8)
UNIX/6000 $30K $10K $12K $400
(For Honneywell 6000, runs under GECOS)
C/SEL $5K $2.5K $2.5K N/A
C/Data General $5K $2.5K $2.5K N/A
(Cross compiler, PDP-11 -> DG)
C/8086 $5K $2.5K $2.5K N/A
(Cross compiler, PDP-11 -> 8086)
[Notes: N/A - Not/Applicable (WECO considers these packages tools
and as such are not subject to an acadmic discount); K = $1000]
It was not clear what each compiler package included (i.e. assembler,
loader). Later discussions indicate with Larry Iseley (sic?) of WECO
indicate that the C/8086 package includes compiler, assembler, loader,
debugger, and external+internal documentation (probably just the tour
through the Ritchie compiler).
UNIX 3.0 may be out by the 1st of the year, 4.0 not for a while
(holding off to see what becomes of the anti-trust suit)
Upgrade credit is likely to given for UNIX 3.0, if and when 4.0 is
released.
UNIX 3.0 is claimed to run on everything from an 11/23 to an 11/780.
(That I've gotta see.)
Their most current UNIX licensing figures were:

DEC announced the following:
PDP-11's under DEC maintenance may acquire a UNIX diagnostics system
for use by field service people.
[As always,] DEC is trying to get field service to be more responsive to
UNIX users (they have UNIX courses for field service people, etc.)
==========================================================================
BBN claims their C/70 is now as powerful, if not more, than an 11/70
due to microcode changes (I might temper this statement by adding that
their claim is based on an evaluation of overall system comparison.)
==========================================================================
George Gobel (at Purdue) is trying to unload a virtualy unused 11/44 which
he has been using as a "UNIBUS teminator" for his 11/780
He has software which can be used to monitor the VAX in real time through
a memory window (also debugging tools) -- all this stuff runs on the
aforementioned 11/44
