Summer Workshop on the Computation of
Elementary Transcendental Functions
June - Sept, 1981
A small number of students and others will collaborate this
summer, some working full-time and others part-time, to pro-
duce computer programs that calculate elementary transcen-
dental functions like
log, exp, tan, arctan, sin, cos, arcsin, arccos, ...
for use with the proposed IEEE standard for floating point
arithmetic (see the IEEE magazine "Computer", March 1981).
Some money is available to pay a few students as research
assistants; other participants are expected to be supplied
by interested industries in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Prerequisites for participation in the workshop are
1. An interest in the subject.
2. Proficiency in programming in C or Pascal or Fortran or
in assembly language on the VAX or PDP 11 or any other
machine on which the proposed standard has been implemented.
3. Competency in numerical analysis and linear algebra and
calculus at the upper division undergraduate level.
Would-be participants should contact the undersigned.
