Re: Are gifts everywhere? (from arpanaut)
WLW still has the capability to broadcast at high powers.  Not 500,000W,
however, more like 1,000,000 Watts!  Did you ever notice that funny little
circle with the triangle in it that is painted on your AM radio dial at
700?  Good old civil defense days, folks... The may be returning, too!
WLW still does monthly (?) tests of the CD facilities on their extremely
large oil-cooled dummy load in the backyard.  Some ridiculous amount of
oil (500 gallons or so, I think) and a maze of pumps handle it in stride.
Conceptually, you would be able to pick up this station ANYwhere in the
states (probably Hawaii too!) in the event of "an actual emergency".  When
I was in High School in Toledo (no cracks, please) we had learned of the
procedures involved with the old CD stuff.  Later on at O.U. in Athens, I
met someone who had worked at WLW and he said that they still did all that
stuff.  This was in `77, so I don't know the status today.  Could be an
interesting topic, what with Ronnie's trigger finger and all!
