Back in the days before the FCC put a 50,000 Watt limit on AM stations,
there were two 500,000 W stations broadcasting in Cincinnati (my home
town). They were WLW (700 KHz) and WCKY (1560 KHz). It is rumored that
people living near the tower north of town would not have to turn the
switch on to get their flourescent lamps to light; I have also been
told that WLW used to drown out a station in Toronto that also broadcasted
at 700KHz. So much for clear signals.
