usefulness of learn for novices?

What do people out there think about learn as a teaching tool?

Some people here advise novices to issue the command `learn'
after they have managed to sign on.  I personally think that
a person is much better off to sit down with a terminal on one
side of them, and a copy of UNIX for beginners on the other.

I would be interested in hearing from people with views on this
matter.  I would also like to hear from people with experience
writing learn scripts.
