Excellent book.
An excellent book, mostly about the philosophy of gastronomy, is
"How to Cook a Wolf" by M. F. K. Fisher.  This book, published in 1942,
basically tells how to eat well on little money.  It was indispensable
when I was a "Starving Student".  Her premise is, "when the wolf is at the
door, kill him and eat him."  It includes a basic recipe for absolute
el cheapo nourishment called "sludge".  It will keep you alive for
almost no cost, but you won't like it.  Uphill from that are a host of other
moneysaving ideas and nuggets of culinary wisdom, written in Fisher's
inimitable, delightfully witty style.  This book is as fresh today
(barring actual prices and such things as ration books) as when it was
written in 1942.  Well worth hunting down at a used book store or public
library.
