Space Lab and Budget Cuts
The first Space Lab, furnished by the ESA and built by ERNO,
near Hanover, West Germany, arrived today at Cape Canaveral.
Its first orbit is scheduled on the ninth shuttle flight [I'm
not sure if that includes the first four test flights or not],
scheduled for sometime in 1983.  NASA has ordered another $150
million Lab to be built in 1984.

It is designed to give scientists a pressurized cabin in which
they can work in a shirt sleeve environment.  It will be kept
in the shuttle's cargo bay.

-------------------------
In the House-Senate military construction bill, there is only
$2 million, as opposed to the original $9 million, set aside
for facilities at Vandenburg Air Force Base, a future launch
site for military shuttle flights.  Senate members have asked
that the project be reviewed as there are reports that the
original projected cost of $300 million could double before
completion.
