Ariane
GTE Satellite Corp., a subsidiary of GTE, has announced
plans to launch future satellites using three methods
of transportation.  The first is with the European Space
Agency's Ariane rocket, launched from French Guiana.
Arianespace will launch these first two satellites,
called GSTARS's, aboard Ariane 3's in May and June of
1984.  They will be used to transmit voice, data, and
video to the United States.  GTE explained its choice
of the Ariane by citing its launch site near the equator,
leading to a reduction in fuel it must carry and thus
to a heavier capacity, allowing a more advanced satellite.
Also in 1984, the company has reserved NASA Delta rockets,
though the Ariane, the company says, will save 30% because
it can carry two satellites at a time, compared to the
Delta's one.  In 1985, the company has reserved space
on board the space shuttle.
