Subject: Distribution via Netnews
The newsgroup for the Bell Labs Free Press has been changed from
NET.blfp to btl.blfp to restrict distribution to Bell Labs to
prevent accidental disclosure of proprietary information. All
non-BTL sites have also been removed from the mailing list. This, of
course, eliminates any need for the Bell Labs Proprietary Press.
On another subject, I will try to have shorter and thus more frequent
issues of the Free Press.

Subject: hp2621p printer [mal]function
The folks I work with have recently gotten a fair number of hp2621p
printing terminals. SOME of these terminals are subject to a problem
with the log (btm|top) function (which means 'print the stuff as it
comes to the terminal'). The printer seems to get behind and barf,
sprinkling the ASCII graphic for 'delete' across the page and missing
characters. Some of the hp2621p's, faithful and true, don't have this
problem. Anyone out there know what the difference is between those that
do and those that don't?

Subject: psychological research and BLFP
I don't know how many of you are familiar with the work of Philip
Zimbardo. He is probably best known for his research into shyness,
and it is by reading his book on shyness that I came across a descrip-
tion of his previous work.
He previously did research on the mentality of prisoner and guard. The
results were that even the average joe, when put in these roles, developed
the standard characteristics of the roles--the 'guards' became sadistic,
etc. The salient part thereof for this note is this: the guards prevented any
group action on the part of the prisoners by granting minor privileges
to a subset of the prisoners.
What does this have to do with BLFP, you ask? Before I subscribed, I was
typically perturbed about Unix commands, about poor counseling, about the
lack of various and sundry things. Now I subscribe, and one day it occured
to me that now I no longer had so pressing a reason to complain; after all,
I have access to copies of very nice underground tools not accessible to
or not known, thanks to malignant silence, to the great unwashed. I had
minor privileges.

I couldn't tell from your comment what you don't like about the
interface - do I gather you thought that save, reply, and so on
are not available? (Try "?" and see what the options are.)
There is a new netnews about to come out - the major feature is
much less load on the system, but there are changes to the interface,
too. The articles will now come out grouped by newsgroup.
There are provisions for reading articles out of order, much like
those in Mail. (In fact, there is now a provision to use Mail as
the interface while keeping track of what you read correctly - the
old version will assume you read everything.) The new netnews
is within a few days of beta release.
Do I gather that there are more ih sites running netnews now besides
ihnss? What sites are they, so I can update the usenet map, and
how did you get them installed in ihux machines?

[Warren Montgomery (ihnss!warren) has a version of netnews that can
be installed in a private account, and has been installed on
ihux[fgjklnp] that I know of. JLS]

Whoever suggested that last (pipe)line for getting the old x8by11-type
output from nopr/4.0 opr is WRONG: the indentation, when going through a
pipeline that includes the x9700 filter, must be specified BEFORE x9700,
e.g., for npf. Because of the inflexible internal Xerox software, the opr
indent causes the x9700-generated Xerox control line to be displaced from
where the 9700 expects it, and it is not recognized. The last line would
thus be ok as:
npf -s -i10 $* | x9700 -ib | nopr -txr -r $opro
(The options to x9700 just specify that you want the roman (-t or -r),
italic, and bold fonts. Since you get the roman whether you want it or not,
you need only specify italic and bold, -ib.)
