Inodes in Unix
have you considered re-mkfs-ing for more inodes?  mkfs with no args
assumes the average file size is between 3 and 4 blocks (if my memory
serves, and if they haven't changed much since version 7).  clearly,
your system has a bunch more smaller files.  since you have special
needs, you should use a proto with mkfs.  of course, re-mkfs-ing is a
pain, involving dumping the filesystem and restoring it.
