Ooooh ooooh,
I am in the throes of deciding which mechanical monster is going to be
given the (dubious) honor of being my first (bang!whistle!pop!siss!boom and of
course, ba!) NEW!!! car.  After having paid $1600 to get a new tranny
for my '72 BMW, $1200 for rings and assorted goodies (I am not mechanically
inclined, so I am at the mercy of Deutsche Mechaniker @ $30/hr), I am
quite ready to enjoy the luxuries of driving/towing the sick vehicle to a
dealership and telling them to fix it. FREE!!! Yes, I am aware of the real
world of dealer-customer relationships--- but let me keep my dream a little
while... Anyway, after that preamble, to the point...

Does anybody out there have anything to tell me about '82 4x4 Subarus?
Stuff like (Sob...) maintenance costs? gas mileage? driveability?
I live in the Chicago area, and the stuff I've read is glowing about the car,
except that the engine stumbles alot (at least when cold), and that it is
tanding,
or are they just suited for around-town?  Any caveats or options really
nice/poor?  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

                       Eric Thiele

P.S. Before Bimmer-philes lynch me, I really like my Bavaria... It's the
repair bills I can do without.  And my dad's 320i has been great,
    even in that department.
