I was advised some years ago that building any patentable
device for personal use is legal.  However, you may not sell
them, or give them away.  The fuzzy area is the definition
of "personal use"; if I use something in a business, even if
it is on my "personal" workstation, the issue is resolvable
only by extremely expensive attorneys.  The degree of
personal-vs-for profit use also affects how much it is worth
to the owner of the patent to prosecute.
