solid-state paging

It is not clear that paging to a solid-state device is wonderful, unless
for architectural reasons the maximum main memory is too small (e.g.
18-bit PDP11's). The paging/swapping device is logically an extension
of main memory: why not just buy some more main memory? Simpler, less
i/o traffic and system overhead, and probably cheaper (more vendors).
Such devices are TOO GOOD for backing store; they are much better used
for root or /tmp, which are NOT logically just extensions of memory.
