Checkpointing

Has anybody out there written something which would enable a
user to start up a job from a core dump?  The main difficulty
which I've heard people complaining about in implementing this
is the fact that there's no record of what files are open on
what file descriptors.  There are, however, some cases where
the user doesn't particularly need to read any files past a
certain point in the execution of a program.  Is there some
piece of magic out there somewhere to do this?
