raw disk file hacks

Has anyone considered dynamically creating disk subunits,
(conceptually, modifying the driver "sizes" table on the fly)?
My particular interest is in a quick and dirty contiguous file hack
for image and signal processing applications, but I can think of other
mundane uses...
