VAX Instruction timings
>From Sibert.RDMS@MIT-MULTICS Thu Apr 22 21:23:48 1982
Recent traffic has made wonder once again, just how fast Vax
instructions are executed. Is there any printed documentation on this
subject? Benchmarks? Are there general rules which one can apply to get
a rough idea? (Something like X for fixed point, add Y for three
operands, add Z for every memory reference, etc.) Are the timings
difficult to state because of pippelining and instruction overlap?
Finally, are the timing characteristics of the 780, 750, and 730 roughly
linear in relation, or are there great differences in relative speed of
different functions?
