Anybody interested in a program that claims to be able to chat to any other
computer and do minimal file transfer? I have just made my first release of
my 'chat' program (and its associated ftp program) which uses a terminal line
to link to other computers. It is quite simple really, it just types into the
other computer as if it was a terminal, and types back the other computer's
response. What it provides is a virtual terminal to any computer that uses an
RS232 interface. It also is able to take its input from a file, and log the
sessions on a file, thus permitting the most primitive type of file transfer.
ftp on the other hand, is exclusively for shipping files over such a link,
and includes logging you in, transmitting or getting a file, and logging out.
Note that these programs are already in use between a VAX750 under UNIX and
a PDP-10 under tops10, a DECsystem20 under tops-20, a Data General MV8000,
a Chromatics Graphics System, a lineprinter, and another printer. Adding new
hosts takes about 5 minutes each.
