I agree that terminal handlers should have features selectable by the user.
Some of them do not need to be in a terminal driver, however.  Others should
be since some of us like to let a front-end handle getting "cooked" lines
of input, echoing, etc.

I believe that use of ASCII ESC other than as part of an escape sequence
violates the ANSI terminal standards.  Similarly, use of DC1,2,3,4 violates
DEC internal standards (in practice, many terminals need to preempt DC1,3
for synchronization, regardless of what the user would wish).
