Scribe for the VAX
>From Unilogic@CMU-10A Wed Jan  6 20:04:58 1982
While it would not be appropriate for Unilogic to make direct comparisons
between TEX and Scribe in this forum, I would like to take the opportunity to
let you know the current capabilities of Scribe and correct some minor
inaccuracies that have appeared in previous notes.
Scribe runs on all VAX models.  There are versions for VMS and all known
Unix systems.  A single-CPU commercial license costs $25K.  Additional CPU's
at a site are $5K each.  A single-CPU educational license is $10K with add-on
CPU's at $2K each.  Maintenance and upgrades start at $200/month for
commercial installations and $150/month for educational.
Basic Scribe supports as output devices:
    Line printers
Diablo-class typewriters (Diablo, Spinwriter, Qume, AJ832, etc.)
(includes proportional spacing, extended wheels, and colors).
GSI CAT/8 and Wang 38 photocomposers
DEC VK100 (GIGI) color graphics terminal
Support is also available for:  (additional charge)
    Xerox Dover and Penguin
    Xerox 9700 Laser Printer
    Compugraphic 8600 photocomposer
    Mergenthaler Omnitech/2000 photocomposer
Support is planned for:  (will deliver within 120 days)
Xerox 5700 (In 860 word processor mode)
    Xerox 8044 (STAR print server)
    Canon LBP-10 (IMPRINT-10 system)
    Mergenthaler Linotron 202
    Mergenthaler VIP series
    Autologic APS-5 or micro-5
    IBM 6670, 3800

Scribe also runs on DEC-10, DEC-20 and IBM/MVS systems.  We will deliver
versions for Prime systems and the Three Rivers PERQ by April 30, 1982.
All versions of Scribe have identical capabilities and manuscript files
may be freely transferred among them.  We have recently begun to improve
on and incorporate into Scribe those public-domain features of TEX that
seem desirable without porting any aspects of the TEX user interface.
The first of these was Knuth/Liang hyphenation, which is now a standard
option of Scribe 3C(1250), the version we are releasing now.
These comments can be taken as the official policy of Unilogic.
Further questions may be addressed to me at 605 Devonshire Street,
Pittsburgh, PA  15213.  Telephone 412-621-2277.
                                       Mike Shamos
                                       President, Unilogic, Ltd.
