In this case, it was not a cacheing problem, because
the volume was indeed mounted /NOCACHE.  Not only that,
but the system was booted with a .PAR file
that made caching impossible.  Finally, after checking
for lost files by examining disk space usage, I see
where 26,000 blocks are still missing, which is reasonable
for the number of files about which I got the invalid header message.

Of course, I could believe the file headers are bad... but in this
case, how might I recover this space and identify the files?  Also,
why didn't VFY identify these headers as bad when I ran it in the mode
where it checks the BITTABLE vs. INDEXFILE allocations and also
supposedly checks file headers?  (This is the mode when you specify no
switch.)
