I have seen two sites that have a handy program laying around called
MTREAD (origin uncertain) which will read fixed-blocked magtape
and also have the option to perform EBCDIC<->ASCII translation.
I believe it came out on one of the early symposium tapes for VAX/VMS.
It is fairly straightforward to do yourself, but it seems worthwhile
to propogate one standard hack.  I bet many sites have it
and don't realize it.  Also, I think DEC Software Sales people were
propogating it, and it might be available from your local office.
