FORTH for the VAX and several queries
>From RUBENSTEIN@HARV-10 Tue Nov 17 08:14:41 1981
I have written a version of FORTH for the VAX and am willing to make it
available for FTP if anyone is interested.  It tries to follow the
FORTH-79 standard as much as possible on a 32 bit machine with
one major exception:  I am in love with the TO construct (i.e.
say VAR instead of VAR @ and 5 TO VAR instead of 5 VAR !)  The
documentation is not quite ready yet, but if anyone's interested in
looking at it, let me know.

And now for the question:  Can anyone tell me how to intercept the
traceback in order to put it into an error log file?  I can get
the error code through standard LIB$ESTABLISH(HANDLER) but can't
figure out how to get traceback.  I've tried various combinations
of logical names and mailboxes with no success.  Anyone with any
helpful hints?

And another question:  I have the EMACS binary that came on the
EUNICE tape.  It apparently does NOT use TERMCAP,
because it treats my ambassador as a 24-line VT100 and does not
pad the clear-to-beginning-of-screen function as it should...
Has anyone adapted EMACS to run on other than a VT100?  Do you
need the sources do do so?  If so, where does one obtain them
(they aren't on either the EUNICE tape or the VMUNIX 4bsd tape
as far as I know).  Also, the describe-function command
will not work, saying couldn't run program, or somesuch.  What
am I missing?

And finally, I really hate opening up this can of worms, especially
after so many different queries already, but here goes:  OK, so
I have EUNICE and the 4bsd tapes.  Now what?  I am willing to accept
the possibility that UNIX wins, but I have no idea how to go about
demonstrating it for myself.  Can anyone point me to some intro-type
documentation?  I gotta say that UNIX is \very/ unhelpful;  I couldn't
even figure out how to type a file (other than cp file /dev/tty0 which
seems overly verbose).  Someone once told me that "ls" is useful
for getting directories; this is about the extent of what I have been
able to figure out.

Thanx
Stew

P.S. I run a 750 under VMS in the Harvard Chem dept.

P.P.S. Just finished VMS internals course at DEC -- a lot of neat
and clever stuff in there!  I'm willing to answer questions on such
if I can (dunno why I took the course -- my machine has been up
continuously for 11 weeks).
