Costs of terminal ribbons
>From RAM@MIT-MC Sat Apr 10 14:58:20 1982
There is a hidden cost in inferior manufacturing which I recently
discovered for cloth ribbons (for a DECWRITER, although I presume the
same problems would apply to all): Some manufaturer's use a plastic
center hub, with the little hook that should hold the ribbon therefor
susceptible to breakage of the printer should happen to apply too much
force when the ribbon is about to reverse (in prinicple I guess this
shouldn't happen of the reversal rivet is far enough away from the
ribbon end). It then becomes necessary to scrounge a better spool, if
you can. If you can't you throw away the ribbon and hope it doesn't
happen with the next one. I recommend sticking with a supplier whose
product you find acceptable even for a small cost penalty.
