My Favourite (Low-Cost) Terminal
>From teklabs!tekmdp!azure!stevenm@Berkeley Sat Oct 24 04:11:16 1981
My Favourite Cheap Terminal:
Name: Ambassador
Manufacturer: Ann Arbor Terminals
Price: ~ $1200 ($950 in 100's)
Interface: ASCII - RS232 150 to 19.2 Kbaud
Features:
Full ANSII standard terminal control sequence:
insert/delete line/char; choice (software control) of 18,20,24,28,
30,36,40,46,60 lines on screen; 60 lines of memory, any not on
the screen can be scolled through; user can set upper/lower "host-only"
windows; can set scrollong regions; 17 fully programmable function
keys (with a shift level); META-key (for EMACS);
15 inch screen, P39 green screen standard, Grey (fast) screen
available, but it will only do 18-30 lines (not up to 60).
Character quality is good in all modes, best at 30 or 36 lines.
12 key keypad fully programmable; small case (14 inch cube);
detachable keyboard; VT100 compatibility mode (with VT52 compat mode);
push/pop line commands; attributes: bold, blink, rev. video,
underlined, concealed, all combinations of above;
printer port standard; both simultaneous send/recieve mode and monitor
(buffered) send recieve mode ( = forms fillout mode); operator
conveniance features: underscore or block cursor, blinking or not,
wrap on either margin, slow scroll mode, auto-pause mode, fast or slow
key repeat, fully programmable tab stops
Keyboard has reasonably good feel, choice of keyclick or not,
non-volatile memory for mode settings, power-up string, all
sorts of other goodies.
Note that this is not a graphics terminal and it is not compatible
with HP anything. It is, however, compatible with the ANSII
standard, which seems to be taking over the business. 'Vi'
runs just great on it. Only botch is that the keyboard is connected
to the terminal box with a ribbon cable.
Service: no field service, although the terminal is very simple
and reliability is very good. At the price you can buy a spare
and ship boards back to the factory.
Does not have: fonts, real windows, additional memory, graphics.
(although you can get instructions for burning your own font roms)
Steve: I mailed this to ucbvax!info-terms. If this was not right, would
you resubmit it for me?
