Subject: mail loop
I'd like to publicly apologize for the mail loop that got started yesterday.
I can't go through all your mailboxes and get rid of the mail which you
no doubt waded through to get to this one. I have broken the loop and
will take a different approach to solving the problem, an approach which
is considerably less dangerous.
The problem was that people on Usenet were unable to reply to or participate
in discussions on the arpanet, due to the restrictions on the gateway
between uucp and arpa nets. Some mail was allowed through, but much of
it was being rejected. I was trying to arrange that articles posted on
the usenet newsgroups got sent to the mailing lists on the arpanet.
(As you can see from the second loop message, many people on Usenet
assumed that this was already the case.)
The solution being adopted now will not present as orthogonal a user
interface as the first one - people will have to mail to such addresses
as ucbvax!info-terms rather than posting on newsgroup fa.info-terms,
but it will be less dangerous, and usenet will only get one copy of
each article instead of two.
